I believe we left something
out of the equation that day
we split for a smarter hemisphere.
The here-and-now still has nothing to say,
so we go on playing
our weird and singular games,
games whose rules ooze
through the fabric of the everyday
and kind of settle there, hoarding resources
and expanding their borders.
Come winter, I’ll have no recourse
other than lesser violence.
Of course, there’s a science of sorts
at work behind the scenes, but
who has time for details like these?
Sooner or later, the rattle and bang
of modernity’s vast engine
drowns everything out but its own grinding aria,
and each of us finds a new extreme
we’re willing to be driven to.
