For Mathew, On the First Day of His 27th Year

Standard

I wouldn’t have guessed that after all this time
                                          You and I
                 Would still be wading
The avenues of implacable distress,
                               And churning our stomachs
In ways which some would call
Counter-productive, but for us,
                                                 It’s just a good time.
Always, I’m silently moved by
                      The muddled triumphs beneath
Our shortcomings, almost too obscure.
And I can safely say that I
Have seen more of the world
With you than with anyone else.
       Such marvels! inexorably woven
Across the expanse of my vision.
