Lament for June Bugs

Standard

June bugs arrive in hordes
                      Hurling themselves
At the porch light
                           With such desperation
        That you’d think
They were in love with the glow!

But such a hopeless attraction.
Such a meaningless
                              Spectacle

                  As one by one
The invertebrate suitors
Careen to the ground and land
Smitten on their backs to die
                                          Smothered
In the warmth of their desire
                        And their beloved caressing
       With luminous hand
                         The empty exoskeletons.
