The Aquarium

Standard

I.

The largest fish in all the fish tank
Slithers and slinks his way
                  Through the tepid gloom
         Of the aquarium
                      Like the obsidian tail
                                     Of some ominous kite
It’s been weeks since any
Of these fish were fed –

                          And the largest fish stalks
                          The others with hungry fins.

II.

The largest fish in all the fish tank
Has died, and now he hovers
Near the surface – a grim display, indeed.
The smaller of the fish are jubilant
At the sight of this fallen menace,
                                  One by one
                                        Emerging from their hiding places,
                Their eyes widening, deviously approaching
                           The lifeless largest fish
                                                    With hungry fins –
